What is time off in lieu?
Time off in lieu (TOIL) is a way to compensate employees with time off, instead of paying overtime. For example, if an employee works more than their regular working hours, or works on a non-working day (i.e., overtime, weekends or bank holidays), they may be able to request the time back as additional leave.
In workplaces that encourage flexible working, this is a great way for employers and employees to re-adjust their working hours.

FAQs
What happens if an employee has outstanding TOIL when they leave?
The employee's annual leave entitlement includes any TOIL accrued. Therefore, any outstanding leave is included in the PILOH calculation when the employee's contract is terminated.
