If you've set up If you've set up electronic notifications in both your HMRC and PayFit accounts, PayFit will automatically retrieve any HMRC notices for you, including tax code changes. For further information about how to set this up in PayFit, please refer to our Help Centre article.

This article explains where you can view any tax code changes, information about the type of tax code change, and the relevance of the sequence number.

Viewing this month's tax code changes

  1. From the left, choose Run my payroll, then Monthly changes.

  2. Under the People section, click Tax code changes (& HMRC notices).

  3. Under the Tax code changes table, you'll see a list of the tax code changes this month.

A tax code change usually includes a data type and a sequence number. These are explained in further detail below.

Data type

Under the Data type column, you'll see one of the following:

  • P9: An employee's tax code change issued by HMRC at the start of the tax year.

  • P6: An employee's tax code change issued by HMRC during the tax year.

  • P6b: An employee's tax code change issued by HMRC during the tax year, including the employee's previous taxable pay and tax paid.

  • P9X: A tax code change applied to all employees on an L, M, or N suffix tax code at the beginning of the tax year. Though the last time the P9X had any effect was in April 2021. A P9X is applied automatically by PayFit at the start of the tax year so it doesn't appear within your tax code changes received from HMRC. For further information about tax code changes at the start of a tax year, please refer to our Help Centre article.

  • None: If there is no data type, the tax code has been changed by an admin, either in the employee's record or using a bulk import. For further information about how to make a manual tax code change, please refer to our Help Centre article.

Sequence number

The sequence number is issued with the tax code change by HMRC. It can be viewed in your HMRC Online account or via the PAYE Desktop Viewer software. The sequence number also proves that the tax code change was issued by HMRC and hasn't been changed manually.
